Pregnant women food

 


I hate to admit that one of my favourite snacks in Cambodia is synonymous to food taken mostly by women, specifically pregnant women.

Mchoo, is a combination of fresh local fruits mixed with spices that include chilli, dried shrimp, cambodian cheese (kpik), sugar and tamarind. Fresh fruits are cut into bite size so that they can blend well with the spices. Jujube, young green unpeeled banana, cashew nut fruit (not the nut but the fruit) ktut, cambodian cherry are some of the interesting fruits that give mchoo a unique taste of tanginess, sweetness, sourness and some bitterness. The explosion of taste in your mouth is just gastronomically satisfying as once you have it on your palate, you just cant stop...well at least that bears truth for me. 








Whenever tuk tuk drivers see me on the road with a bag of mchoo munching away, they would ask me, without fail "bong, are you pregnant?". 

 If eating mchoo is meant only for pregnant women, then I am continually pregnant many times over.
